Primary school is recognised for its success in offering an inclusive education
Grove Primary School has retained its status as a Centre of Excellence, after receiving the prestigious Inclusion Quality Mark
Inspectors say that pupils at Grove Primary are “welcoming, polite and curious” and “significantly exceed” national averages across all core measures
Grove Primary School in Carlton Colville, Lowestoft, part of the Active Learning Trust, is celebrating after receiving the prestigious Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) for the third year in a row and being named a Centre of Excellence.
The IQM is a national award which recognises the work that Grove Primary School does to support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
Following a review in June, the IQM assessor noted that pupils at Grove Primary “achieve very well” and “significantly exceed” national averages across all core measures, including for reading, writing and maths.
The IQM inspection report praises the school for the way it has continued to “develop and drive forward” since its Ofsted report in 2022, which rated the school as “good”.
The IQM assessor was impressed with the school’s “broad and dynamic” curriculum and to see that reading is given a high profile, with pupils divided into small groups of same-level readers for twenty-minutes each day.
The school’s “vibrant, well-stocked” library is very much at the heart of the school and is accessible from every classroom; music is also important at the school.
Grove Primary’s use of “zones of regulation" was highlighted as a highly effective way to help staff communicate with pupils and to de-escalate potentially difficult behaviour.
The pupils at Grove Primary are singled out for particular praise, as “welcoming, polite, curious, bold and absorbed in whatever they were doing”; the quality of their discussions was impressive, with their excellent speaking and listening skills “particularly noteworthy”.
The school’s “thriving pupil leadership programme” gives the children a wide range of responsibilities, for example, via Wellbeing, Eco, Road Safety and No Outsiders initiatives.
The IQM report says that the school is an “encouraging environment” for adults who are keen to progress their careers in education, as evidenced by the current staff who joined as support staff and are now training to be teachers.
Grove Primary’s trust, the Active Learning Trust, is also praised by the IQM assessor for offering the school “with a wealth of additional knowledge, collaboration opportunities and skill sharing, to support its onward journey”.
Rachel Kounnas, head teacher of Grove Primary School, said: “We are so proud to share the news that our school has once again been recognised as a Centre of Excellence, receiving the Inclusion Quality Mark for the third consecutive year.
"This prestigious award reflects our belief that every child is unique and our commitment to put every family at the heart of our community.
“Our highly skilled team works hard to nurture, care and educate, ensuring that everyone is valued and supported to achieve and I am delighted to see everyone’s efforts recognised in this way.”
Lynsey Holzer, CEO of the Active Learning Trust, said: “We are very pleased to see Grove Primary continue to uphold this standard, fostering a caring and inclusive environment for all children, regardless of background or ability.
“Our trust is restless for excellence and committed to seeing all our pupils flourish, with every member of the school community feeling valued and supported.”
