Week Beginning 27.03.17
It has been another very busy week in the Reception classes and we have all been exploring and being active! The sun has been shining which means lots of us have enjoyed our outdoor learning even more!
This week we have continued to read "Supertato!" stories and retold them using our own characters. We have had lots of different superheroes and villains in our stories. We have used our phonics and key word knowledge to help design our own story maps. All of our teachers have been very proud of the writing we have produced! We have become "Superhero Writers!!!" Take a look...
Some of us have also been busy retelling our story using pictures and then we have labelled the pictures with words using our letters and sounds knowledge to help us. During some of our carpet times this week we have shared examples of our good work with our friends. This helps us to develop our communication and language skills and our story telling.
This week we have also been developing our cutting skills. We are getting much better at using scissors independently. We had a talk about using scissors safely too and how important this is. We cut out and decorated star shapes - they were a bit tricky at first!
During our PE session with Mr Websdale this week we played some parachute games! It was really fun!
In cooking this week we made Easter chocolate nests. We explored melting and the changing state of the chocolate from a solid thing to a liquid. We thought about other things that melt too.
Throughout this half term all of the adults in the Early Years have been very impressed with how hard everyone has worked on their homework tasks. It has been excellent to see some of these activities being shared on Tapestry also. Here are some examples of the excellent posters children made this week! Many thanks to all the parents and families in their continued support with these tasks and supporting and encouraging your children with their learning at home.
Week Beginning 20.03.17
We have continued the theme of Supertato and the children were very excited when we read another story 'Supertato Veggies Assemble'. They have been innovating a version of Supertato through 'Talk4Writing' and we have had some wonderful imaginative ideas. We made peas soup and the children found it very amusing that we would be eating the evil peas!
The children had great fun in their mis-matched clothes and mad hair!
Week Beginning 13.03.17
This week we read the wonderful story 'Supertato'. It captured the children's imagination from the very first page and all week they have taken part in adult led and child initiated activities based on the story. This included searching for 'escaped villian peas' and creating their own Supertato heroes.
Week Beginning 06.03.17
What a busy week for the children and the staff!
This week we read the story "Really Brave Tim." The book told the story of a little boy called Tim who felt upset because lots of things scared him. All of his friends were very brave when it came to heights, the dark and deep water but all of these things made Tim feel very scared and worried. As the story went on we found out that unlike his friends, Tim was not afraid of spiders and he saved his friends from a very big spider! During circle time we talked about things that we felt scared about and things that did not worry us. It was lovely to hear all the different ideas and we talked about ways we could help if we felt brave when others did not.
We explored mini-beasts inside and outside!
This week we have tried tasting new things! We tried healthy food sticks (carrots, peppers and cucumbers) with different dips (garlic, onion and chive and guacamole!) Some of us had never tried these things before so it was something new for us. We used different words to describe the taste and smell. We also talked about the importance of healthy living and how exercise can help us stay fit also.
We are continuing our "Superhero" topic and some of the children have been very creative and made capes from items on the model making table!
Week Beginning 27.02.17
This week we have been learning how to write a description or stories about the superheroes we created over the half term holiday. The children thought of words to describe the hero, and then label it, to write a sentence or a to write a short narrative. For Maths the children have been learning how to half, including the idea of halving by sharing objects between two people.
World Book Day
We had a wonderful time on World Book Day. In the morning the parents were invited into the classrooms to share books and the children wore some wonderful book character costumes. The children were asked to take part in the decorating a potato competition and we had some wonderful entries.
Week Beginning 20.2.16
Week Beginning 06.02.17
Throughout this week the children have been talking about the dentist and the job they do to help take care of us. We have discussed our own experiences of dentist trips and shared these with one another. We completed a Literacy activity where we thought about things that are good and not good for us to eat. We sorted the different pictures and then did some writing about them. Some of us thought about the initial sounds we could hear in the different words, some of us wrote labels for the various foods and others of us wrote information sentences. We are all getting good at using the things we are learning in our letters and sounds groups and then applying these to our writing activities.
We watched an educational video on the interactive whiteboard that showed a little girl, the same age as us, visiting the dentist for the first time. We saw how she sat in the magic chair that moved her backwards and forwards and saw the very big, bright light that the dentist used to look in her mouth. The dentist talked to the little girl about how important it is to clean your teeth properly twice a day and eat foods that help to keep your teeth healthy and strong. At the end of the video we all opened our mouths and pretended to be at the dentist!
In our Maths this week we have been exploring "doubling." We talked about how this means two of the same thing. We explored doubling using cubes. The adults are very impressed at how clever we are at solving number problems. Our counting skills are getting much better and we are using mathematical vocabulary to explain and expand our ideas.
In our cooking activity this week we made milk jellies! We discussed the importance of milk in our diets and talked about the word "calcium." This is very good for our teeth and bones and helps them to remain strong and healthy. We then investigated the different changes that were taking place during the cooking activity and explored the changes from hot to cold and how this would change the state of the jelly.
Week Beginning 30.01.17
This week we have continued to learn about Recycling and the importance of reusing, repairing and reducing. We had a wonderful trip to the charity shop and the children were very sensible whilst going to look at the recycling bins. The shop assistants and members of the public commented on their good behaviour. The children were very pleased to be able to help choose some toys, games, puzzles and dressing up clothes to have for our classrooms.
We would also like to say a big thank you to the parents who donated unwanted items to give to the charity shop.
Week beginning 23.01.17
The children labelled maps of people who help us in the local community.
They gave instructions and controlled Beebots around a map with local places and used directional and positional language.
"He is beside the Charity Shop."
The beebot is behind the Co-op shop."
The children taking part in a PE session and using the large apparatus for the first time.
The children will be taking part in the whole school event 'Sign2Sing' in partnership with the Warren School on 10th February 2017. The purpose is to think about British Values and to promote respect for others in the community. The children have really enjoyed practising the song this week. Here is the video so you can help them at home.
The children helped to make and then tasted a healthy fruit salad. Lots of discussion took place.
We used maps in the woods to find people who help us in the community.
The children were so excited when it snowed on Friday. They explored the texture, and temperature and enjoyed making prints.
