February 25th 2015

Today Year 3 had a fantastic trip to "Time and Tide" museum in Great Yarmouth. They took part in a day of activities about WWII. They learnt how to "make do and mend", how to do drill and rifle practise with the Home Guard, the role of the Air Raid preservations officer, and all about rationing in Mrs London's shop.

February 2015

The children had a chance to try on replica gas masks kindly brought in by a parent. They said they were "stuffy" and "smelly" and that "everyone's voices sounded funny"!

February 2015.

We were so lucky to have Doris and Arthur in to talk to the children in Year 3 about their experiences in WWII. Doris was evacuated as a child and Arthur lived through the Blitz in London. Arthur had prepared a very interesting information "story" for the children, and they had  brought in their original ration books and identity cards. The children had prepared questions and the Q and A session and resulting discussion was lively and informative. It was an excellent afternoon which the children enjoyed greatly and during which they learnt so much. Thank you Doris and Arthur!

To all parents/ carers,

Just to confirm that for the next two weeks times tables checks will be on a Wednesday, and spellings on a Thursday. This Wednesday (4.2.15) will be the 4x table. The next week (11.2.15) will be on all five tables learnt so far (2's, 10's, 5's, 3's and 4's). The children should have new spelling lists in their spelling books today ready for this Thursday (5.2.15).

                                         Miss Jones.

February 2015. This week we have been thinking about what it must have been like to be an evacuee in the second world war. The children did some drama to show how the evacuees were feeling and what they must have been thinking.

January 2015. As part of our "World War 2" topic, we have been reading and working on "War Boy" by Michael Foreman, who grew up in Pakefield during the second world war. The children have had fun this week painting their faces with Liquorice comfits, as the children who came in to Michael's mother's shop with their penny to spend did this to simulate war paint!

Dear all, Happy New Year and Welcome back.

The Newsletter for this term will come home with your child by Friday this week but a sneak preview of what to expect is already uploaded above.

We would like to draw your attention to a new initiative for Poppy Class, our Times Tables Competition, which will start next week. We are hoping all of our children will become even more proficient at using and applying their times tables knowledge in Maths and to this end are setting them a challenge. More details about this can be found in the newsletter.

As ever, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak with one of us or catch us on the playground at the end of the school day if you wish to discuss any concerns about your child and their education. We all want the best for your child.

Best wishes,

Mrs Fewkes and Miss Jones.

As part of our work on fractions we have been investigating using Smarties. We asked questions such as , "What fraction of the Smarties are red? Not red? " and even turned our fractions into equivalent fractions where we could. In this case, today, only Smarties had the answer!!!

RE and Art Day - December 11th 2014

RE and Art Day - December 11th 2014

Interestingly enough, on the news this morning there was a discussion about children not knowing the true meaning of Christmas. This gave me much to think about during the day, particularly towards the end of the day when our children, from the Early Years right up to Year 6 shared, in assembly, the work they had been doing during the day.

I disagreed with the news, gladly and whole heartedly by 3pm. Not only do the children at Grove Primary School know the true meaning of Christmas, but they could tell the story of the Nativity, empathise with Mary and Joseph and their struggle to find someone warm and dry for Mary to have her baby and children shared their work on the meaning of the symbols and customs that have grown up around this time of celebration.

Art work was completed during the day - Poppy and Snowdrop classes worked together to paint and decorate Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus in the Manger. We also wrote prayers and thought about people less lucky than us at Christmas.

I was very proud to take assembly at the end of the day and be able to hear about so much good work that had gone in across the school. Our children know the meaning of Christmas and the atmosphere in school during the day was very special and quite magical.

A very Merry Christmas to you all from Poppy class.

Australia Learning Cafe December 2014

The children and their parents really enjoyed our learning cafe on Wednesday 3rd December. They carefully sewed felt Kangaroo bags, which combined our topic work on Australia with D.T.
