# Mathematics

Mathematics at Grove Primary:

The children will be involved in a wide range of activities designed to help them to develop confidence in using and enjoying maths, and to teach them to think mathematically and logically.  They will have opportunity for discussion, practical work, practice of basic number skills, problem solving and investigation.  Children from Year 1 take part in a daily ‘Big Maths’ session focussing on understanding of number and mental calculation.

'Big Maths':

Each day the children take part in a Big Maths session where the children work in smaller groups focussing on developing their understanding of number and calculation.  This is an opportunity for many of our parallel classes to work together with an adult.  For each aspect of Maths taught we work through a progression of statements that often starts in Nursery and go up to Year 6.  The children work on skills based on their ability and targets, rather than age.  Each session lasts 15-20 minutes with a quick pace combining recall of previous knowledge and new learning.  The skills and knowledge learnt in Big Maths are used and applied in Maths lessons.

Each Big Maths lesson is composed of several parts:

C: Counting - this may be counting in 3's, 50's, 1/2's or developing an understanding of number such as rounding or ordering numbers.

L: Learn its - this is based on rapid recall of calculation facts the children should know to make them more efficient at Maths.

I: It's nothing new- this is where prior knowledge is applied to a new situations, e.g. if you can do 3 + 4, then you should be able to do 300 + 400.

C: Calculation- this may be practising mental or written methods for the four operations.

The end of each week all children are assessed on a Big Maths CLIC test which gives them a score out of 10 and is used to identify gaps and plan the lessons for the following week.  They also complete a timed 'Learn its' test to see how many of the expected calculations they can recall quickly.  The target for all children is to beat their own scores; they compete against themselves, not each other.

The National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014) aims to ensure that all pupils:

• become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
• reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
• can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Please find below our Calculation Policy which shows the methods we use when teaching Mathematics in school.  Within each document the progression is referred to in year groups, but we are aware that not all pupils will be working at an age appropriate level, and so will work from year groups above and below according to the needs of the child.

Spring Term 2015 Maths Day

It was so lovely to see the whole school participating in Maths activities together on Friday 20th March.  Our focus was 'Maths through Stories' and every class started their session by reading a story as the context for the maths activities they took part in.

Many children in the Early Years were fortunate to be joined by their parents as they took part in maths activities together.

In Key Stage 1 the children worked in groups made up from all four classes which gave them an opportunity to work with different people.  The children moved round four different activities throughout the morning.  Each of their activities was based on a high quality reading book.
I was very impressed with how the children in Key Stage 2 collaborated with each other.  Pupils in Year 6 supported the younger pupils within their group helping them to access and understand the tasks.  Their activities were based on traditional fairy tales- which have more maths in than you may have realised!
